Japan has 3 Le Mans 24H victories(Mazda in 1991 and Toyota in 2018 and 2019). The US has 4(Ford in 1966-1969). If Toyota wins this year and next year(is likely to do so), Japan will overtake America in overall Le Mans victories. And there isn’t a damn thing America can do about it.
And that’s before Peugeot arrives in 2022 to challenge Toyota.

When is the last time an American company went after the top class? Caddy? They ran like twenty years ago, right? The new GT and Vette do n’t run the top class . I can’t remember if the Viper ever went to LeMans.

And who’s to blame for that?
The companies.
That’s who.

Vipers raced at lemans, but I don't recall if they were factory backed. I don't think so?

The new rules make it easier for them to. Spec chassis with whatever engine and bodywork you want to run. Should greatly reduce the cost of development.

Overall Lemans wins don’t translate well to crossover sales.

You have no proof of that

Hard evidence, no. As all winners in The last ten years have most likely had crossover type vehicles for sale: Toyota, Porsche, Audi. I’m not sure what was for sale in 2009 from Peugeot, ( it was the 3008 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_3008 )
Backing up out of those 4 Bentley was the other winner in 2003, and the Bentayga came out in 2015.
So, there is a possibility Le Mans wins could have an effect on crossover sales. I stand corrected, but it doesn’t change my belief in my statement.
I had to do a bit of research for this.

Hybrid race car leads to better hybrid tech, leads to better hybrid crossovers, leads to better crossover sales.

I am so sorry my joke wasn’t clear and you went and dug up a great response. I just meant that a crossover hadn’t won le mans yet, so we had no evidence.
Looking at you porsche. Quit being cowards and enter a Macan.

Are we really counting Toyota's "wins" by default after Audi and Porsche left?

If the V8 Supercars could have a Ute series, there can be an all over crossover series, somewhere. I doubt the place would be on the streets of Le Mans along with the race cars. Feeder series maybe. Was the electric Jag series crossovers or SUVs?
Meh. Just trying to be technically correct. I wasn’t about to go look up when the 3 super powers started selling crossovers. Even though they all hit it and quit it.
Is there even a manufacturer that doesn’t make a suv/crossover? McLaren?

Yes. Audi had a solo run for a bunch of years, too.

Because their dominance was so total that everyone else gave up trying to beat them. Apples and oranges situations.
